Week 1 Rundown of LPL Play-offs Summer 2020

The LPL Playoffs have finally kicked off!
Here’s a quick recap of week 1’s matchups.

Round 1, Match 1: Victory 5 Vs Fun Plus Phoenix
Victory 5 went on a miraculous run during the summer split regular season. They had a terrible spring split with a record of 0-16. They are the 5th seed in the LPL and have finished the regular season of the summer split with an 11-5 record.
Fun Plus Phoenix, the reigning world champions, finished the spring split as the 3rd seed and came runners up in the Mid-Season Cup to Top Esports. However, their summer split was mediocre and they stumbled into playoffs as the 8th seed.
Result: Victory 5 won the tie 3-1 and progressed to the quarter-finals where they face Suning Gaming.
FPX have been eliminated but due to the championship points accumulated in spring, have qualified for the regional gauntlet where they have a chance to make it to Worlds. The Player of the series was V5’s Li “Mole” Hao-Yan.

Round 1, Match 2: LGD Gaming Versus Team WE
It has been four and a half years since LGD last made the LPL playoffs. They have finished the summer split with a 10-6 record and come as the 6th seed into the playoffs. Han “Peanut” Wang-ho, Xie “Langx” Zhen-Ying and Su “xiye” Han-Wei have looked reliable throughout the split. LGD comes into the tie as marginal favorites ahead of WE.
WE ended the regular season with a 9-7 record and entered the playoffs as the 7th seed. They faced 3 defeats in the last 4 matches of the regular season with their only victory coming up against eStar. Some positives for WE include Jiang “beishang” Zhi-Peng being the 2nd highest in kills and assists and Zhao “Jiumeng” Jia-Hao being named the rookie of the split.
Result: LGD qualified for the quarterfinals as they beat WE 3-1 on the day. They face Invictus Gaming in the quarter-finals. The Player of the series was LGD’s Su “xiye” Han-Wei.

Quarter-Finals, Match 1: SN Gaming Versus Victory
Suning Gaming and Victory 5 are two teams with contrasting play styles. Suning are slow starters. They have the 8th lowest Gold Difference at 15 min and tend to draft late game compositions whereas V5 draft for early game dominance and play aggressively. Bin is 1st in kills among LPL toplaners and is the 3rd highest in solo kills in the LPL. Hu “SwordArt” Shuo-Chieh and Lê “SofM” Quang Duy have also put in impressive performances for the team throughout the split. They ended the regular season with a 12-4 record and enter the playoffs as the 4th seed.
Result: Suning Gaming reached the semi-finals with a 3-1 Victory over V5. They face Top Esports in the semi-finals. The Player of the series was SN’s Lê “SofM” Quang Duy.

Quarter-Finals, Match 2: Invictus Gaming Versus LGD Gaming
Invictus Gaming have looked dominant all split. Song “Rookie” Eui-jin has had a phenomenal split and his CS difference at 10 min is 1st in the league. Though IG has the lowest first blood rate and the second-lowest KDA at 15 min, their gold lead at 15 min and CS difference at 15-24 min is 3rd and 1st in the league respectively. They have bounced back to form and finished the regular season with a 12-4 record and enter the playoffs as the 3rd seed. IG come into the tie against LGD as the overwhelming favorites.
Result: LGD swept IG 3-0 to set up a semi-final tie against JDG. Invictus Gaming can still make it to Worlds through the regional gauntlet. Due to this result, V5 did not qualify for the regional gauntlet and thus, cannot make Worlds. The Player of the series was LGD’s Han “Peanut” Wang-ho.
